Overview

This tutorial will walk you through how to upload files to the file database on a Nexus site.

Prep-work

  1. Create your mod and make sure the name is consistent throughout. Example:
    Name of the Mod: MyMod
    Name of the Files:
Data\MyMod.7z (compressed archive of all the files in your mod)
    Data\MyMod.esp (no version number)
    Data\MyMod Readme.txt
    Data\Meshes\Armor\MyMod\Mcuirass.nif
    Data\Textures\Armor\MyMod\Mcuirass.dds
    Data\Textures\Menus\Icons\Armor\MyMod\cuirass.dds
  2. Make sure it conforms to Modding Etiquette.
  3. If the mod includes .NIF files, make sure the texture paths are not hard-coded.
  4. If your mod is visual or contains items, How to create screen shots and convert to .JPG format.
  5. Create a readme file (Readme Generator)

Upload the mod

  1. Create an account and login
  2. Click MEMBER AREA at to top-right of the site if not already in your User Area.
  3. Click Add a new file and fill in the following information and click Submit
    • File Name: MyMod (the name of your mod)
    • Category: Pick the right one for the right game
    • Short Description: Type a one or two sentences that best describe your mod (keep this as short as possible)
    • Long Description: Paste the entire contents of your readme here. You should not be adding anything to this upload that is not already contained in your readme.
    • Version: 1.0
    • Author: you (or the actual author if your re-uploading for somebody else)
    • Give editing access to other members: Enter the member ID (number) of the person you want to have access to edit your mod entry. (Rarely used)
    • Allow users to comment on this file? Yes allows a comment log, No prevents its creation. This option is only available when you first upload your mod.
    • Allow discussion of your file? This allows a mini-forum section to allow for discussions outside the general comments and endorsement area. This is a good area to create sub-forums for things like Bug Tracking, Suggestions, Tips-N-Tricks, etc.
    • Allow users to start new comment topics? Yes allows anyone to create new discussion topics, No allows you to have full control. This is automatically disabled if discussions are not allowed.
    • Allow users to endorse the file? Yes allows anyone to give their endorsement of the file, No disables the endorsement option. This is automatically disabled if comments are not allowed.
    • Allow users to tag this file? Yes allows anyone to suggest content search tags to be associated with the file to aid in advanced searches.
    • Allow users to upload images for this file? Self explanatory.
    • Hide the file from public viewing? Yes means that nobody can see your mod page. Helpful when first uploading your mod to avoid silly questions about content if you are not finished uploading.
    • Does this file contain adult only content? Select Yes if your mod, your description or your screenshots contain adult-only material, select No otherwise.
    • I agree to the Terms and Conditions? Self explanatory.
  4. After you click Submit, you are taken to another page where you can actually upload your mod. Set the following and click Submit:
    • File name: MyMod 1_0 (the name of your mod and the version...use an underscore in place of a period)
    • File: Click Browse and pick the archive of your file (example: MyMod.7z)
    • Category: Self explanatory.
    • Small Description: I would recommend adding one of the following prefixes to your description, especially if you have multiple files: REQUIRED, OPTIONAL, OBSOLETE, TUTORIAL, VIDEO, PATCH, etc.
  5. Visit your mod page and set the initial tags since you are more familiar with the mod than anyone else. Example: Oblivion, Language - English, New Models, New Textures, Armor - Male, Armor - Shields, NPC Vendors

Attach screenshots

  1. Once the mod is uploaded, click Manage Your Files in MEMBER AREA if you are not already there.
  2. Find the mod you just uploaded in your mod list and click the link called Images that is on the same line as the mod you want to modify.
  3. For Image #1, click Browse and find your 1st screenshot (should be the best one).
  4. Type a short description of the image.
  5. Repeat the above two steps for images 2 thru 5.
  6. Click Submit.
  7. Repeat the above steps until you have uploaded all your images. The site tends to order the last images uploaded at the top. You can change which is your primary image displayed on the main page at any point by clicking the "Make primary image" link under the image thumbnail.

Videos

If you have YouTube videos, you can attach them to your mod page in its own video tab.

  1. Once the mod is uploaded, click Manage Your Files in MEMBER AREA if you are not already there.
  2. Find the mod you just uploaded in your mod list and click the link called Videos that is on the same line as the mod you want to modify.
  3. Set the following and click the Submit button:
    • Title: Self Explanatory
    • Full YouTube URL: Paste the full path to the YouTube video...not just the YouTube ID.
    • Description: Type a short description of what you want displayed under the video.

File mirrors

It is never recommended to keep all your eggs in one basket so it is advisable to use multiple hosting services. Here is a list of online hosting and file mirroring sites.

  1. Once the mod is uploaded, click Manage Your Files in MEMBER AREA if you are not already there.
  2. Find the mod you just uploaded in your mod list and click the link called Mirrors that is on the same line as the mod you want to modify.
  3. For each location you have uploaded the mod to, type in the name and URL for each one and click the Submit button.
  4. If you have any old file mirrors that need to be removed, simply click the Delete link under the name of the mirror.

NOTE: It is recommended that you include the version number in the mirror link which makes it easier to maintain. Example: Version 0_9_3 at MediaFire

Upload a readme

It is recommended that you upload the readme file separate from the archive so that the entire mod does not have to be downloaded just to review the readme. The upload readme feature of this site allows for the readme to be directly available for view.

  1. Once the mod is uploaded, click Manage Your Files in MEMBER AREA if you are not already there.
  2. Find the mod you just uploaded in your mod list and click the link called Upload Readme that is on the same line as the mod you want to modify.
  3. Click the Browse button and find the readme file for your mod. Click the Submit button to upload the readme.
  4. To delete an existing readme, click the link called Remove the ReadMe uploaded for this file

NOTE: The Readme file must be plain text (.txt). To update the readme, simply re-upload and it will overwrite what is already there. When viewing the readme on the site, you might have to refresh your browser to see the changes due to how browsers cache files such as this.

Comments

If a mod page does not have a comments tab either by initially disabling comments or by a server error during the upload, the only way to fix this would be to delete the mod page and re-upload again.
